The Indian Music Group (IMG) of St. Xavier’s College was founded in 1973 by Fr Lancy Pereira. It was Fr Pereira’s dream to see a love for Indian classical music take root in the hearts of his students, as well as to inculcate an appreciation for the classical arts. The IMG has, for forty-six years, remained faithful to its original ideals and organises workshops and concerts for students and the public alike. Its flagship concert, Janfest, occurs every January. This year, Janfest is even more special, since 2019 marks 150 years since the establishment of St Xavier’s College.

Spanning 2 days and 3 sessions, Janfest has witnessed several masters of the art of Indian classical music perform in past years, including Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Ustad Bismillah Khan, to name a few.

This year, the first session, in the evening of 25th January, will commence with a performance by the Sakhi group – India’s first all-female group of Indian classical artists, led by Smt. Kaushiki Chakraborty on vocals. The other artists in the group are Kum. Nandini Shankar on the violin,
Smt. Debopriya Chatterjee on the flute, Smt. Savani Talwalkar on the tabla, Kum. Mahima Upadhyay on the pakhwaj, and Smt. Bhakti Deshpande performing Kathak. This performance will be followed by a jugalbandi of maestros Ustad Shujaat Khan on the sitar and ShriGanesh Rajagopalan on the violin.
