Recently the makers of the Tamil-English biopic ‘Ramanujan’, based on the life of the mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan, shot a vital portion of the movie in the house of the math wizard. The house has the statue of the genius installed, which during the shoot had to be covered by a woven basket to maintain continuity of the shoot.
During the shoot, the cast and crew of the film encountered mathematics students who came to the house to take the blessings from the genius (his statue) before their math examination. Since the shoot was on, the students were not allowed in the premises, but when they were notified about the film and that Abhinay, the grandson of legendary couple Gemini Ganesan and Savitri is playing the role of ‘Ramanujan’, they took blessings from reel life genius Abhinay instead.
Abhinay expresses, “The very first day of shoot at Srinivasa Ramanujan’s house was an epic day for me. When I was done with my shot and was about to head to the caravan, I suddenly found myself in a very unusual situation where some mathematics students came to me for blessings.”
He further adds, “What surprised me the most was a family of four – mother, father, daughter and grandmother who stood in front of me holding their hands together seeking my blessings, saying ‘vanakam’ (namaste). I was confused and looked behind to see if they were greeting someone else. When I turned to face them again, I found the daughter at my feet! Shocked, I got her up, and asked why she is falling at my feet. The father said, “Every year, we come here to get Ramanujan’s blessings before her math exams, and we heard that you were doing a movie on the genius. So, what better can happen to her than to get blessings from the genius himself?, I wished the girl the best, and the next day they came back saying that her exam went very well.”
“Ramanujan” is an Indo-British collaboration film directed by National award winning director Gnana Rajasekaran and produced by Camphor Cinema, an independent film production company. The film will track the journey of the ace mathematician from Kumbakonam to Cambridge. It is being simultaneously shot in Tamil and English.
The film also stars Malayali actress Bhama, Suhasini Maniratnam wife of the renowned director Mani Ratnam and the established British stage and screen actor, Kevin McGowan. It features Indian actors Abbas, Nizhalgal Ravi, Delhi Ganesh, Y. G. Mahendran and Sarath Babu and British actors Michael Lieber, Richard Walsh, Cloudia Swann and Elizabeth Bourne playing vital roles as well.
