Out of all the women suffering from lung cancer, 80% of them are non-smokers. The major reason attributed to the cause is the poorly ventilated kitchen and indoor air pollution. Surge in the incidences are profound in tier 2 and 3 cities in and around Ghaziabad.

“In western countries, where rise in lung cancer among women is solely attributed to more number of women taking up smoking, Indian women are affected by environmental pollution. Due to the proximity, air pollution generated within the homes is more dangerous and harmful in comparison to outdoor air pollution. Use of inefficient cooking fuels like wood and kerosene produces large amounts of small soot particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and gradually deteriorates the alveoli, leading to lung cancer.” said, Dr. Meenu Walia, Director- Medical Oncology, Max Super Speciality Hospitals, Vaishali.

Bead Chemo Embolisation becoming the most preferred way of treatment for Liver cancer patients

Hepatocellular carcinoma or HCC is a Primary Liver Cancer (which means it originates in liver and is not because of cancer spread) and is the sixth commonest cancer and the third largest cause of cancer deaths in the world. Treatment of this lethal disease has always been painful, expensive and time consuming. Now with evolving of much safer and targeted intra-arterial treatment called Drug Eluting Bead Chemo Embolisation, also known as DEB-TACE, more and more patients are opting for this revolutionary method.

Trysacryl speheres and Hydrogel spheres made from polyvinyl alcohol are the two types of Drug Eluting Beads available and essentially both work on the same principle. The beads are like “Sago” (Sabudana) seeds that absorb chemotherapy drug called doxorubicin and are released directly in the blood stream into the blood circulation that goes inside the primary liver cancer tumor. They get distributed in capillaries in the entire tumor thus the blood flow to this circulation is blocked by these spheres and they stay inside the tumor and release a very high concentration of chemotherapy drug that kills the tumor cells.

Speaking about this treatment, Dr. Sandip Jhala, Interventional Specialist, Apollo Hospitals-Ahmedabad said “The reason why drug eluting bead chemo-embolisation is fast becoming the most acceptable line of treatment is because these beads have been shown in several studies to effectively destroy the tumor and very little drug goes into circulating blood stream. Approximately 80% of all prostate cancer cases in Gujarat are diagnosed at advanced stages, making the disease difficult to treat.  Doctors in the state are concerned about the rising trend. More commonly affecting men, the cancer has over 1.8 million victims worldwide. Factors affecting increase incidence of prostate cancer vary from increase in stress levels to inactive sexuality in men.

One of the astonishing reasons pointed out through research is the fact that less than 6 hours of sleep doubles the risk of prostate cancer in men increasing the risk to 55%. According to the Indian Cancer Registry, the statistics of prostate cancer have been estimated to increase by 220% by 2020. In addition to increasing physical inactivity and consumption of high trans-fat food, urban lifestyle with its hectic schedules and stress is increasing risk of cancer cases in the state.

“The cancer is responsible for the swelling of the gland near the prostate causing difficulty in urinating. It is common to witness the disease occurring in older population. But we are also seeing the trends coming in for younger population who are less than 40. This is troublesome as our lives have rapidly changed. Due to lack of time and perhaps resources, we often cannot afford to sleep and eat properly. While the repercussions of a bad diet are known, lack of sleep can cause reduced melatonin levels responsible for maintain the sleep cycle. Due to this, the body cannot prevent cancerous growth of the cells”, says Dr. Dhaval Rajde, Surgical Oncologist, Columbia Asia Hospital, Ahmedabad. Read more
