XLRI- Xavier School of Management is all set to organize the 5th ‘Dr Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration on Sustainable Development’ in memory of the Founder of AMUL Dr. Verghese Kurien, otherwise known as “the Milkman of India” on 22nd September, 2018 at XLRI Campus, Jamshedpur.

This year, the oration is to be delivered by Noted Development Activist & Economist, Dr. Jean Dreze. He would deliver the oration on the topic “Economic Growth and Social Development”.

Fr. E Abraham, S. J. Director of XLRI commented, “Dr. Verghese Kurien was a thinker, a revolutionary and a social entrepreneur who ideated the world’s biggest agricultural development programme. It was his “billion-litre idea” which made dairy farming India’s largest self-sustaining industry, with benefits of employment, incomes, credit, nutrition, education, heath, gender parity & empowerment, breaking down caste barriers and grassroots democracy and leadership. XLRI instituted the oration in his memory with the aim to commemorate his legacy through propagating and disseminating the idea of an empowered, equitable and sustainable society.” Read more

The cultural hub of Whistling Woods International, reverberated with laughter and immense enthusiasm as the comedy- Tanmay Bhat narrated his tryst with comedy with the students of WWI. ‘With a motto’ to be a strong promoter of the present-day pop-culture, he described his journey into the world of stand-up comedy.

In a light-hearted yet informative session moderated by Chaitanya Chinchlikar, Tanmay highlighted the important and the otherwise serious aspects of comedy. “I became funny so that people would like me as I did not like myself for the longest time”- revealed Tanmay while he narrated his inclination towards comedy. Tanmay shared how comedy was an instinct for him and hence he used it as a method to ‘fit-in’ during his childhood. On preaching the students about following a career path with honesty and love, he said, ‘Decisions that I made have never been money or strategy driven. I follow what I am most excited and passionate about’. Further, in the conversation, he discussed his past projects and mentioned the technical aspects involved in various mediums of comedy. The Film Fellows initiative, which saw its inception in 2014, aims to encourage and develop filmmaking talent in the Indian Himalayan regions by offering mentorship opportunities with established filmmakers.

At the 5th Indian Screenwriters Conference , held in Mumbai from August 1 to August 3, veteran screenwriter Anjum Rajabali, joined by Aamir Khan, Amit Masurkar (Newton’s director) and Delhi Belly’s Verma on stage, and scores of writers in the audience, prevailed upon Siddharth Roy Kapur, president of the Film and Television Producers’ Guild of India, to work with the Screenwriters Association on basic guidelines to safeguard legal and intellectual property rights of writers.

Kapur agreed to get the powerful grid to favourably consider the demands, which is being seen as a major stride forward. A small clause in a contract document will mean a big leap in the quality of films Hindi cinema produces, even though it will be a few years before the real impact of this will trickle down.

While web-series have opened up space for more independent content, but in terms of mass impact, they are still not a patch on the 70-mm or prime time general entertainment channels (GEC).  Read more

The 3rd and final day of the 5th Indian Screenwriters Conference (ISC) concluded on a beautiful note as 3 living legends Gulzar, writers Javed Siddiqui (Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Zubiedaa) and Kamlesh Pandey (Tezaab, Rang De Basanti) paid heartfelt tributes to 3 late legends - lyricist Shailendra (Guide, Mera Naam Joker), writer Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza (Mahabharat) and writer-filmmaker K. A.  Abbas (Saat Hindustani, Mera Naam Joker).

The Screenwriters Association (SWA) posthumously awarded the late Shailendra, Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza and K.A Abbas for their stellar contribution to Indian cinema and television. These legends were conferred with awards for Lyrics writing, Writing for TV and Writing for Films respectively. Read more

Since inception, the cultural hub of Whistling Woods International (WWI), 5th Veda has been applauded for the insights and knowledge it provides to the students. These sessions manifest and help in overall development in the domain of filmmaking, communication, and creative art forms. Continuing this glorious tradition to impart education in a truly inspirational manner, WWI celebrated the first session of its 8th season of the 5th Veda in the presence of the superstar and the perfectionist - Aamir Khan.

Aamir graced the event by contributing to the tree plantation campaign initiated by Subhash Ghai. The session started with a wonderful composition by the talented students of WWI School of Music. They performed a melodious musical in the honor of Aamir Khan. What followed was a candid session, as Subhash Ghai invited Aamir to share his journey about his career and growth as an artist. On appreciating the actor for his contribution to Hindi cinema, Subhash Ghai said, “Aamir is one of my favorite actors. He has a passion for cinema and compassion for human beings.” Read more

The 5th edition of the Indian Screenwriters Conference (ISC) was inaugurated today by Chief Guest Aamir Khan. The eagerly awaited biennial which is organised by the Screenwriters Association (SWA) is being held from August 1-3 at St. Andrews Auditorium, Bandra.

The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Where Mind Is Without Fear’ that focuses on the challenges facing Indian screenwriters today.

Present at the opening ceremony were Mr. Sanjay Chouhan – SWA Executive Committee member and Convenor of the 5th ISC. Also present were Mr. Sunil Salgia – SWA Executive Committee member and Co-convenor of the 5th ISC, Mr. Zama Habib – General Secretary of the SWA and Preeti Mamgain – President of the SWA.

The conference started with a 2-minutes silence that was observed in memory of deceased SWA members.

Following this, Mr. Sanjay Chouhan, spoke about the journey of Screenwriters Conference and how it has grown by leaps and bounds over the years. He said, “The inaugural edition of ISC which was held in 2006 at FTII Pune was attended by 275 delegates, whereas the first day of this year’s edition is attended by over 800 aspiring screenwriters” Read more
