NCPA presents its most significant dance festival “Mudra Dance Festival 2019. The core theme this year is the journey is “Hasya” from smile to laughter and the different kinds of emotions a smile or laughter can express. On 25th April,2019, the festival will feature a Bharatanatyam performance by MP of Rajya Sabha and Padmavibhushan awardee Dr. Sonal Mansingh & Mohiniattam by Sangeet Natak akademi awardee Mandakini Trivedi. Sonal Mansingh, will present a 60 minutes act revolving around SUSMITA. This consists of mythological stories around Uddhav- GopiSanvaad, Satyabhama- Krshna & Mohini- Bhasmasura. She will be joining the dots to humor by featuring these acts based on laughter that will establish a funny connection. Mandakini Trivedi, a Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee will present Mohiniattam with an introduction to VINODA. The performance will show case a couple of shlokas from Vidyakara’s Subhashita Ratnakosha that looks at the lighter side of Shiva’s Ardhanari rupa. She will also be presenting Kante sagasi- a verse from the Amarushataka. Attributed to the great mystic saint Bhagvan Shankaracharya, this piece will tell the amusing story of a man who dresses himself as his beloved’s girl friend to win her over after a flirtatious error that he committed. The piece celebrates love and life and is testimony that Indian dance is not all serious. It is fun and can make you laugh as well. The event will take place on 25th April,2019 from 6:30 pm onward at Experimental Theatre, NCPA

Event: NCPA presents Kathakali and Bharatanatyam in Mudra Dance Festival 2019

Date: Saturday, 27th April, 2019, 6.30 pm

Venue: Tata Theatre, NCPA

NCPA presents its most significant dance festival “Mudra Dance Festival 2019”. The core theme this year is the journey is “Hasya” from smile to laughter and the different kinds of emotions a smile or laughter can express. On 27th April, Mudra Dance Festival will conclude with a finale performance by Priyadarshini Govind & Sadanam Balakrishnan. Priyadarshani Govind, a Bharatanatyam exponent will perform Hasati- an act that will focus on humour and its different shades in Indian poetry through Bharatanatyam. She will incorporate mythology, general life situations and pieces dedicated towards moral education. The festival culminates with Kathakali performance by Sadanam Balakrishnan (with English surtitles) exploring a simple story from Ravana’s childhood: of competition and conversation with his brothers Kumbhakarna and Vibhishana. After Ravana gets his boon, he comes back to ask his siblings what they have got – almost like a young student asking others what marks they have been awarded in an exam. This act will show a portrayal on how the story incorporates Hasya with all the six variations, from Smita the gentle smile to Hasita, Vikasita, Avahasita, Atihasita and Apahasita), which gradually increases to its uncontrolled climax. It will be performed with subtitles due to the nature of its dance form.The event will take place on 27th April,2019 from 6:30 pm onward at Tata Theatre, NCPA
