Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President of India was the Chief Guest at the 10th edition of the Mohammed Rafi Awards organized by Advocate Ashish Shelar and Spandan Arts.
This event has only got bigger and better with each passing year and the 10th edition sawVenkaiah Naidu and Vidyasagar Rao, Governor of Maharashtra doing the honors’ at a packed gathering at Rang Sharada Auditorium, Bandra. Late Shrikant Thackeray, father of Raj Thackeray was posthumously conferred with the Mohammed Rafi Lifetime Achievement Award for music. Madhuwanti Thackeray, wife of late Shrikant Thackeray, received the award on his behalf.
Playback Singer Poornima Shrestha was also conferred with the Mohammed Rafi Award for excellence in singing. Venkaiah Naidu, heaped lavish praise on the late Mohammed Rafi and fondly recollected his soulful renditions of popular Hindi as well as some Telugu songs. His trademark humor and one liner’s were also evident as he waxed eloquent on music being one of the most positive forces in the world.
Governor Vidyasagar Rao expressed his delight over the awards being held in Bandra, the very suburb that the late Mohammed Rafi resided in and called his own. He further observed that Bandra has probably the highest per capita talent in the country given the number of silver screen stars who have resided in the suburbs over the years.
Advocate Ashish Shelar, MLA and City BJP Chief, expressed his gratitude to the distinguished dignitaries for their gracious presence and fondly recalled the tremendous contribution of Mohammed Rafi to Hindi Cinema and Indian Music.
Also present were Advocate Pratima Shelar, wife of Ashish Shelar and Nasreen Ahmed , daughter of late Mohammed Rafi and Yasmin, sister of late Mohammed Rafi.
