The Yoga Institute, Santacruz – the oldest organised Yoga Centre in the world – celebrated the 88th birthday of living Yogi Dr. Jayadeva Yogendraji with a curtain raiser of the Centenary Logo of the Institute and the commemoration of Shri Yogendra Chowk. Eminent personalities such as Shri Suresh Prabhu (Union Cabinet Minister for Railways, Government of India) as Chief Guest and Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma (internationally renowned Santoor maestro) as Guest of Honour along with others graced this momentous occasion.

As the Chief Guest & Guest of Honour lit the traditional lamp to mark an auspicious beginning, the entire Institute campus was dotted with all sadhakas, teachers and all those who believe in Yoga and the Institute to catch a glimpse of their respected Gurus, prominent personalities as well as partake in the grand celebrations. The celebration started with a floral tribute to all the revered guests! This was followed by a drama and dance performances to deliver the messages of the Lords, saints and mystics to the audience.

Smt. Hansa Jayadeva, Director, The Yoga Institute, Santacruz, said, “The Centenary Logo of The Yoga Institute has been exclusively designed to celebrate the mission as well as the vision of the oldest organized yoga institute in the world. Three generations of Yogis are relentlessly working to spread the knowledge of Yoga since 100 years. The Institute continues sharing practical applications of yogic ideals and making Yoga a way of life for millions across the globe.” She added, “Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra gives simple instructions and yet the message leaves a lasting impression on receivers. His message is to go within and be one with the self to know the self and understand it. Be a good student and the teacher will definitely come in your life. If the right does not stand up, the wrong cannot be controlled. A good Yoga teacher is a good role model for society.”

Shri Suresh Prabhu (Union Cabinet Minister for Railways, Government of India), who is looked upon for his simple lifestyle and attitude of Karma Yogi said, “Yoga goes beyond asana. There is a lot more that goes into practising Yoga. Yoga is one of the ways of knowing self. Another way of realising goals is via music as it renders harmony between mind, body and soul. I express my gratitude for being invited to be present on this gracious occasion and feel blessed to receive blessings of Dr. Jayadeva and Hansaji.”

Paying rich tributes to Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma (internationally renowned Santoor maestro), said, “I have the highest regards for Dr. Jayadeva because he threw light on Yoga as being a way of life and not just an exercise. He often used to share his pearls of wisdom like ‘To be famous is easy but to handle fame is difficult’. He used to advise us to avoid shouting and raising voice as anger overpowers self. I am feeling very fortunate for being associated with The Yoga Institute for so many years and I am happy that The Yoga Institute is now entering its centennial year.”

 

The Yoga Institute, Santacruz, felicitated Suresh Ji andPanditJi with a trophy as a small token of appreciation.

 

The audience was enlightened about, a man of few words, Dr Jayadev and his style of teaching the knowledge of Yoga in the most subtle yet impactful manner. Some awareness about the Institute’s signature teaching of Bhavas was also shared.

 

The Yogendra Chowk has been raised to commemorate 100 years of The Yoga Institute and pay tribute to the Founder, ShriYogendraji. Born in a family of Yogis in 1929, Dr.Jayadeva Yogendra(M.A., PhD.), is a simple man and a true Yogi. Revered as a Guru for his absolute dedication to a life of discipline and simplicity, he has been spiritually inclined since childhood. Today, as the President of The Yoga Institute, he continues to carry on the Founder’s legacy in his silent and sincere way. Fondly known as Dr. Saheb, he has pioneered work in Yoga Education and Therapeutics. Dr.Jayadeva’s most significant contribution to the yoga renaissance is the introduction of Bhavas as expounded in the Samkhya philosophy, in conjunction with the practice of classical yoga asanas. He was awarded the prestigious Hargobindas scholarship in 1955 for his remarkable work on MoksaParvan of the Mahabharata (His Doctoral Thesis). Students at the Institute continue to draw constant inspiration from his wisdom, compassion, wit and unflinching commitment to truth.

 

The Yoga Institute was founded on 25th December, 1918 by the Founder Shri Yogendraji and is presently run by Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra, who also servesas President of The International Board of Yoga. Spread over one acre of land in Santacruz, with three buildings dedicated to Yogic activities, this non-profit organizationhas been running on its own strength for almost ten decades now. Founder Shri Yogendraji -

 

Known as the Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance, ShriYogendraji has pioneered thepractice of Yoga for householders. He continued to teach and spread the awareness ofauthentic classical yoga at The Yoga Institute, Santacruz until his death in 1989.

 

Smt. Sitadevi Yogendra -

Fondly known as Mother, Sitadevi married Shri Yogendraji in 1927 and joined him in hismission of spreading the knowledge of yoga in the world. She began teaching womenand children at The Yoga Institute and has written many articles and books on thesubject.

 

Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra–

Shri Yogendraji’s son, Dr.Jayadeva Yogendra, is a simple man and a true Yogi. Beingborn in a family of Yogis, he has had a spiritual inclination since childhood. Today, asthe President of The Yoga Institute, he continues to carry on the Founder’s legacy in hissilent and sincere way.

 

Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra -

A dynamic and charismatic personality, Smt. Hansaji, wife of Dr.JayadevaYogendraand present Director of The Yoga Institute, has dedicated her life to the running of theInstitute and to teaching yoga as a way of life in a completely practical way. Smt.Hansaji was also invited by the Government of India, Ministry of AYUSH, to grace the world’s first International Day of Yoga in Delhi. She shared the stage with Hon. PrimeMinister, ShriNarendraModiji, as he addressed the nation about the timeless values ofYoga on 21st June 2015.

 

The Yoga Institute, Santacruz, the oldest organized Yoga Centre in the world, was founded on 25th December, 1918 by the Founder Shri Yogendraji. It found a permanent base in Santacruz, Mumbai, in 1948. Spread over one acre of land amidst nature, with three buildings dedicated to Yogic activities, this non-profit organization has been running on its own strength for 9 decades now.
