Author and Miss India International ’98 Shvetha Jaishankar recently launched her first book ‘GORGEOUS – Eat well, look great’, an unusual cookbook that talks about how to eat what you truly enjoy.

The beginning of a new year is a great reason to renew your ideas of living according to Shvetha. A whole year has gone by and there are memories to relive, experiences to absorb and of course an opportunity to make a pact with yourself to improve your quality of life.

What better way to begin this than by re-looking at what you eat, how you keep yourself fit and tweak or make additions to your way of life? Doing this will help you set goals, pursue old ones that have been forgotten and offer overall clarity to your life. A commitment to work on and improve oneself is the best detox. Towards this, Shvetha shares a few tips here.

Shvetha Jaishankar offers 5 tips and inspiration for a “detoxicating” journey!

Ø Make water your best friend forever! Start the day and end the day with water and then remind yourself through the day to hydrate. It is the one nutrition tip that everybody agrees upon so just go for it!

Ø Do a simple detox at home during your day off? You can put up your feet, watch your favourite shows and let some miracle foods do their work for you. During meal times eat something light such as steamed or light cooked vegetables. Vegetables like spinach, pumpkin, bottle gourd and fruits such as pineapple, musk melon are light and are great as whole.

Avoid dals, non veg and other tougher to digest foods that day. Another good option is drinking rasam. Gorgeous has a lovely rasam recipe and there are many ways to make it including exotic sounding drumstick rasam and neem leaf rasam.

Ø Breathe attentively: Twice a day, focus on your breath. Inhale for 5 counts and exhale for 5 to 10 counts and do this 10 times. Easy to do when in a car stuck in traffic or just before going to bed. There are a few other pranayama exercises which are also great cleansers, you can watch simple videos online and follow.

Ø Exercise: regular exercise is a great way to Detox. Your mind is clearer; you feel better about yourself with exercise of some form with medium to high intensity. Choose a form of exercise that you truly enjoy or are curious about. If you are new to it, it may take a few sessions before you latch onto it!

Ø WIP: We all are a work in progress and tend to be victims to some form of ” humanness”: anger, jealousy, laziness. To me an important part of any detox is good thoughts and a commitment to improve something in you that you know you should do but haven’t been able to for whatever reason!
